Biography
American organist JOSEPH ARNDT is the Director of Music at Grace Church in Newark, NJ. At Grace Church he conducts the parish choir for the high masses, regularly performing Gregorian Chant propers and Renaissance masses. Mr. Arndt is the recipient of numerous honors, including First Place awards at the West Chester University and Joan Lippincott Organ Competitions. He received a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School and a Bachelor of Music degree from Westminster Choir College. He has studied the organ with Paul Jacobs, Ken Cowan, and Diane Meredith Belcher.
Mr. Arndt is dedicated to promoting the organ and excellence in church music. He has a small studio of organ students and he has also recently joined the faculty of the Newark Boys Chorus. An active performer, he has performed recitals at venues including Clare College (Cambridge, UK) and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival (Charleston, SC). In 2009 and 2010, he will perform in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Georgia.
An interest in contemporary music has inspired Mr. Arndt to collaborate with composers in compiling new organ repertoire. This season, he will give premieres of new organ pieces by Jonathan Dawe, Conrad Cummings, and Christian Carey. He also performs neglected compositions from the 20th century, including works by Albright, Barber, Demessieux, Ginastera, Guillou, Peeters, and Persichetti. In 2008, he collaborated with Paul LaRosa to perform Max Reger's rarely-heard Zwei geistliche Lieder for baritone and organ.
